About “Fear in Philosophy”

“Fear in Philosophy” is a site about the role fear plays in society today. It will focus on the Social Contract idea that we fear the State of Nature, an idea first put forth by Thomas Hobbes. Hobbes’ ideas about the role of Fear still have relevance today, and this site explores those ideas through analysis of Hobbes’ writings and a discussion of current events.

From pop culture to The Leviathan, “Fear in Philosophy” covers everything with an eye toward how Fear influences society’s stances and decisions.

The site is both academic and casual, historical and current, objective and commentary. It should have a dialogue and fuel a discussion.

I’m Tom, a college student studying Hobbes formally. I put together the ideas for this site over the past year through class essays, scholarly research, and reading Donald Trump’s Twitter feed an unhealthy amount. I’m not the first person to note Hobbes’ focus on Fear, but I try to put this together in an original way using the ideas I’ve developed myself on the topic.
